Dizziness & Vertigo Rehabilitation

Vertigo is the sensation of rocking or rotation when you are perfectly still. It tends to last for several hours or days and can severely impact your ability to work or drive. Medically, it is distinct from general dizziness because it involves the specific sensation of movement. Vertigo is often due to a problem in the inner ear, specifically the semicircular canals which act like a gyroscope for the body.

For patients suffering from auto accident injuries or workplace incidents, vertigo can be a debilitating symptom of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or whiplash. Proper diagnosis is critical for your personal injury claim and recovery.

Causes and Risk Factors

There are a variety of causes for this condition. The cause may be central or peripheral:

  • BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo): Small crystals in the inner ear become displaced, causing irritation.
  • Meniere’s Disease: Fluid buildup in the inner ear.
  • Traumatic Injuries: Head injuries from car accidents or slip and fall incidents significantly increase the risk.
  • Medications: Certain antidepressants, blood pressure meds, and anti-seizure medications.

If your vertigo is the result of a workplace accident, our team is experienced in documenting workers' compensation therapy plans to ensure your treatment is covered.

Diagnosis and Treatment

To diagnose vertigo, we take a full history of your symptoms, including any recent motor vehicle accidents or medical malpractice history regarding medication. A comprehensive neurological exam checks brain function to distinguish between peripheral and central causes.

Advanced Testing & Rehabilitation

We utilize the Dix-Hallpike test and the roll test to monitor symptoms. If structural problems are suspected, a CT scan or MRI may be recommended by your physician.

Effective Treatments We Offer:

  • Epley Maneuver (Canalith Repositioning): Highly effective for BPPV, benefiting as many as 90% of patients.
  • Cawthorne Head Exercises: A series of movements to decrease nerve sensitivity.
  • Balance & Gait Training: Essential for returning to work and daily activities safely.

While medications like Meclizine provide temporary relief, they are not a cure. Physical therapy addresses the root cause, which is often preferred by insurance adjusters looking for functional recovery evidence.

The Prognosis

Most patients with peripheral vertigo find substantial relief with physical therapy. Although recurrence of BPPV may occur, it is unlikely to persist beyond a few days with proper care. When vertigo persists, evaluation for underlying structural problems is necessary.
